IMO reaffirms 2023 greenhouse‑gas strategy to decarbonize shipping by around 2050

Arsenio Dominguez reiterated that the International Maritime Organization adopted a greenhouse‑gas strategy in 2023 with a long‑term objective to decarbonize shipping by around 2050.
"Back in 2023, we adopted a greenhouse gas strategy with a goal to decarbonize the sector, by around 2050," Dominguez said. He added that the transition will follow technological developments—carbon capture, hydrogen‑derived fuels, ammonia, methanol, ethanol and potentially nuclear—and described the effort as a marathon, not a sprint, because of fuel availability, infrastructure and cost implications.
Dominguez also said IMO is working with oil‑producing countries on how they can transition to cleaner fuels and technologies, and that immediate wholesale conversion is not feasible without fuels and infrastructure in place.
