Kenny Pendleton, director of the Sweetwater County Events Complex, presented a year‑end review on Feb. 17 that showed steady growth in economic impact and continuing capital needs.
Pendleton said the complex recorded about $31 million in economic impact for the year, with roughly $11.5 million coming from the National High School Rodeo. "We reached 31,000,000 this year in economic impact," he said, noting the complex also hosted large RV rallies, racing, motocross and other events that drive overnight stays and spending. He reported nearly 24,000 overnight RV-park nights and rising rental-space days for meetings and events.
Officials and commissioners used the review to underscore aging infrastructure and the need for larger, indoor and permanent spaces. Pendleton said priority projects from the master plan include an expansion of the exhibit hall and addressing the indoor arena roof; the board discussed capital-funding tradeoffs and agreed to continue exploring investments that could keep or attract large events.
Pendleton also listed recent facility upgrades—new fencing, signage, painting and hurricane shutters—and said the complex is pursuing new bookings and multi-year agreements with event organizers to backfill recent event losses.
