VTrans details $7.4M plan to replace washed-out Bridge 42; construction targeted for 2027

VTrans project manager Adam Monroe briefed the Jamaica Select Board on plans to replace Bridge 42 — the structure that washed out in July 2023 on Route 30. Monroe said the preferred design is a 120-foot steel-girder span with integral abutments that will increase the opening to roughly 1,300 square feet and rely on piles driven to refusal instead of conventional footings.
Monroe said the project has cleared environmental review and the agency is working to finalize easements and finish design before advertising for construction this summer. "Total project cost, so this includes engineering, right of way, construction, so probably 7,400,000," Monroe said. He told the board a temporary modular bridge installed in 2023 will remain in place until the new structure is built; traffic will be maintained off-alignment during work. Monroe noted steel lead times are long (12–15 months currently) — the team hopes to advertise in July to keep construction in 2027 but said an August advertisement could push final completion into early 2028.
