Board approves waiver of landfill fees for towed RVs to support nuisance cleanup

The board voted June 12 to waive wrecking-yard landfill fees for motorhomes and RV trailers removed as part of code-enforcement or obstructed-roadway removals when the vehicles are handled through licensed wrecking-yard services. The request came from the sheriff’s office as part of implementation of a towing/obstructed-roadway ordinance.
Robert Quick of the sheriff’s office said the county and local wrecker services had discussed the barrier that landfill fees pose and asked the board to consider waiving fees when vehicles are towed to a designated area and destroyed on-site by licensed wrecking yards to streamline cleanup and minimize county costs. "We ask this to be put on the agenda for the potential of waiving of the fees at the dump so that we can offset that cost to the wrecking yard and the county," Quick said. Commissioners emphasized the waiver must go through licensed wrecking yards, not private drop-offs, and directed staff to implement a form and process documenting the chain of custody.
The motion to approve the waiver carried on a voice vote; staff will work with the sheriff’s office and landfill operators to establish the documentation process and public messaging clarifying the limited scope.
