Dinwiddie firearms safety committee deadlocks on proposed shooting restrictions

A six-member committee convened to study recreational shooting in Dinwiddie split 3–3 on a proposed ordinance that would have required 100-yard separation between dwellings, backstops, and a 9 p.m.–7 a.m. curfew; Supervisor Daniel D. The Dinwiddie County Firearms Safety Advisory Committee held three meetings and drew roughly 80 residents to the final session after promotion by the Sheriff, Supervisor Daniel D. Lee told the Board on May 19.
The committee split three in favor and three opposed on a proposed ordinance that would have required a 100-yard separation between dwellings for shooting without permission, required backstops and prohibited shooting between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Mr. Lee said public comment generally fell into two camps — enforcing existing laws and holding individuals accountable for errant bullets, or adopting new regulations such as time limits and minimum distances — and that an overwhelming majority of attendees opposed new regulation.
"I recommended a 'wait and see' approach," Mr. Lee told the Board, and said the committee's work is likely complete for the foreseeable future unless future incidents suggest further action is needed.
