The Comanche County Facilities Authority on April 13 tabled action on replacing transport vans for the detention center after hearing detailed usage and cost figures. Jail Administrator David Weber said the vans are driven "about 100 to 200 miles per day," that his newest van is a 2020 model with 87,000 miles and that two vans exceed 200,000 miles. Weber told the board a new van would cost about $43,000 each.
Members discussed alternatives. Corinne Owensby suggested the federal surplus program or purchases through entities such as the Kansas Highway Patrol. Sheriff Merritt described acquiring prisoner vans from a military base and said the vehicles in the surplus program had lower mileage, estimating "about $15K for a prisoner van." Vice‑Chair Ryan John moved to table the request pending further review; the motion passed with John, Kenny Kinder and Chair Johnny Owens voting aye.
