County staff outlines infrastructure, airport and parks projects across Lander County

County staff (speaker 3) delivered an extensive update on Sept. 11 covering community facilities, airport grants, transportation work and multiple construction projects across Lander County.
Staff said Austin Community Center work and a new pickleball court are underway and that preventive road and school parking projects should complete by month’s end if weather permits. Staff reported multiple FAA grants for airport rehabilitation and hangar design; one grant noted in the presentation was described as largely FAA-funded with a small county match. The automatic weather observation systems (AWOS) at both Austin and Battle Mountain are past expected service lives and staff said they are seeking grants and will cover county matching costs where required. At Battle Mountain, Safe Routes to School work, sports-field lighting, dog-park sections, golf-course improvements and a new fire/EMS station award are in progress; staff said many of those projects have come in under budget and that certain work depends on outside partners such as NV Energy and NDOT. Staff also reported rail construction drawings have been submitted to Union Pacific and that construction could start within about a month once comments are addressed.
The presentation included several cost-share and timeline references; staff said the county will pay smaller matches on FAA grants and will return with details as bids and agreements are finalized. Commissioners asked for follow-up on specific items and thanked staff for securing grants and managing projects.
