Resident urges Hamilton County to consider public air-rifle range for youth safety and competitions

Timothy Hensel, who identified himself as an advocate for air rifles, addressed the Board during the reopened public-comment period and asked the Board to consider "developing a public air rifle range in Hamilton County for teaching young people proper gun safety." He said many local gun clubs and open ranges do not allow air rifles and that powerful pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) models now exist, including designs used for hunting.
Hensel suggested Hamilton County could host state pellet-gun and air-rifle competitions currently held in Terre Haute, and that a public facility could support police and sheriff’s training programs, 4-H shooting clubs, Boy Scout marksmanship instruction and families seeking a safe place to shoot. The Board recommended Hensel meet with Deputy Director Oldham to produce a written proposal the Department and County Council could evaluate and noted potential grant sources such as NRA and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) shooting-range grants.
