Resident Tells Loris Council Hurricane Flooding Underscores Drainage Need

During public comment at the Loris rezoning hearing June 11, resident Warren Kirton of 620 Highway 45 urged the council to address chronic drainage problems near the rezoning site, saying that "during the hurricane of 2018 he lost everything from flooding." Kirton noted his property is on the county side of Highway 45 but asked the city to work with the county on solutions.
Mayor Michael E. Suggs told speakers to verify their contact information with Clerk Melinda T. Price and said "the city and county are in the process of talking about future drainage projects and grants to help with this issue." Planning and Zoning Director Meredith Holmes added that a grant application is in process that, if approved, could help the area, and that the county researches school capacity when developers propose new housing. She also noted that Santee Cooper "is looking at some sub-station upgrades."
No council action was taken on drainage at the hearing; staff indicated the city and county are discussing potential projects and grant opportunities that could address the concerns raised by residents.
