Town Administrator Tom Tober told the Select Board the town is adapting a short-term rental ordinance template and expects to bring a draft in July that focuses on registration and a mandatory local contact for nonlocal owners.
"it really addresses is registering the properties and having a local caretaker if you are not local to the area," Tom said, explaining the proposed ordinance would require annual registration and a local contact but would not set limits on days rented. Board members cited past emergencies (floods in 2021 and 2023) where unreachable nonresident owners hampered emergency response and recovery efforts, and argued a local contact would be critical for future extreme events.
Tom also briefed the board on a revised sign ordinance for commercial properties with increased penalties and reinstated restrictions on feather signs; the sign changes will be discussed further and scheduled for approval at a future meeting.
