The Jamaica Select Board on June 22 voted to approve a steering committee to study the Jamaica Village School property and advance an application to the Preservation Trust.
"I'd like to make a motion, that we approve as a board the structure of the, committee to study the Jamaica Village School property, its use and development," the Chair said before the board voted aye. Committee members told the board they had reviewed Preservation Trust case studies, will recommend a committee name and are considering forming a 501(c)(3) to support fundraising and grant eligibility.
Committee speakers said the Preservation Trust offers technical assistance but funds only a small number of projects this year; they stressed the need to craft a three-year, achievable plan consistent with the trust's timeline. The committee asked the board to provide specificity about the town’s near-term capital commitments and a timeline for repairs and upkeep that will appear in the grant application.
The board approved the steering committee structure and directed committee members to return with membership names and more detailed budget needs. The committee will present findings and funding recommendations at a future select board meeting and may request a special meeting if additional approvals are needed.
