Residents urge Huachuca City to restore Activity Center kitchen, fix doors and add ADA upgrades

At the March 21 hearing residents and councilmembers pushed to modernize the Activity Center — restoring a kitchen, improving ADA door access, upgrading bathrooms and making the building rentable for events and senior programming.
Resident Diane Hildebrant told the council the Activity Center needs a working kitchen and improved ADA access.
"The ramp is great, but once they get to the doors, they can’t open them," Hildebrant said, urging staff to address circulation and door hardware so people with limited mobility can use the facility. Manager Suzanne Harvey and Councilmembers discussed whether a renovation could be scoped as a single CDBG‑eligible project or pursued through State Special Projects for design and engineering first.
Several speakers added that a modernized Activity Center could host senior meals, after‑school programs and rentals that generate revenue for the town. William Osborne of SEAGO reminded the group that regional account CDBG typically funds a single implementation project for the town this cycle and that SSP is a pathway to pay for planning and engineering to make larger projects shovel‑ready.
Councilmembers asked staff to include the Activity Center modernization (kitchen, ADA doors, accessible bathrooms and parking improvements) in the official project list compiled from the meeting minutes so it can be scored for regional or SSP funding.
