County committee backs NACo push for local input on federal detention sites

The Washington County County Services Committee voted to support a resolution calling for "meaningful local government involvement" and greater transparency when federal authorities pursue large facilities for immigration processing or detention.

The chair told members that at the National Association of Counties meeting he learned federal agencies have been buying large warehouse space for processing and detention. He said communities must be involved in evaluating costs and impacts before such facilities are used. "Meaningful local government involvement is essential to determine whether such facilities are appropriate for their area and ensure transparency regarding cost, impacts, and other factors affecting public welfare and local planning," the chair said. The chair announced the resolution passed and will be forwarded to Congress.

Committee members expressed surprise that some jurisdictions were learning of the practice only recently and raised concerns about effects on tax rolls and local emergency services. A member of the public later raised related concerns about county participation in federal programs and called for reducing reliance on jail beds for immigration-related custody.
