Planning Commission backs Fortner annexation and forwards positive recommendation to city council

The Sandy Planning Commission voted unanimously to forward a positive recommendation to the City Council for the Fortner annexation, a staff presentation said, after staff described three parcels along South 10th East totaling just over an acre.
Brian McHouston, the assistant community development director, told commissioners the request would annex properties at 8564 South and 8590 South 10th East, noting “this annexation is just over an acre in size.” He said one parcel at 8590 South 10th East contains an existing duplex and staff recommended zoning that would allow the duplex to remain a legal, conforming use rather than create a legal nonconforming use.
Commissioner David Hart moved that the commission recommend approval and specify zoning consistent with staff’s findings. “I’ll make a motion that it is recommended that the Planning Commission send a positive recommendation to the city council for the Fortner annexation to be approved and zoned R1-10 and R2-10,” Hart said. Commissioner Danny Schoenfeld seconded, and the motion carried with five votes in favor and none opposed.
The commission closed public comment after no in-person speakers appeared for the annexation; one online attendee raised an unrelated video-feed issue. The recommendation will go to the City Council for final action.
