Shenandoah County to Apply for FEMA Fire Prevention Grant to Fund Two Inspectors

The Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors consented June 9 to apply for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Fire Prevention & Safety (FP&S) grant that would fund two civilian fire inspection positions.
Chief Hall told the board the application would request "$326,000 for salaries, benefits, uniforms, and equipment" and that the county would provide a 5% match, "totaling $16,000." He said the two civilian hires would supplement the single Fire Marshal and help reduce overtime costs paid to cross-trained sworn staff. County Administrator Evan Vass noted the application deadline is June 22.
Supervisor David Ferguson voiced support for applying now and reviewing costs after any award. The board gave consent to submit the application; no final hiring or budget authorization was made at this meeting.
The matter will return for subsequent action if the county is awarded the grant, at which point the board can consider hiring and long-term budget impacts.
