Parks officials tout 2 million annual visits as commissioners set parks millage public hearing

Ottawa County Parks staff told the Board of Commissioners on March 24 that parks welcomed more than 2,000,000 visits in 2025 and that the system now protects about 7,700 acres. Director Jason Chamblin highlighted new land acquisitions and trail work, including additions at Rosy Brown Natural Area and progress on the Idema Explorers Trail. "When complete, the Idema Explorers Trail will span more than 36 miles," the presentation noted.
Following the presentation, several public commenters urged the board to place a parks millage request on the ballot. The board adopted a resolution to hold a public hearing on April 30, 2026 to receive input on a proposed parks and open-space millage replacement and increase to a combined 0.53 mills. The board amended the notice to indicate it may consider placement on the August 4 or November 3, 2026 ballots. Commissioners said the hearing will let residents weigh in on funding options and potential designs for either a single levy or multiple questions.
