Sandy canvassers certify primary returns; Zoltanski leads mayoral primary

The Sandy Board of Municipal Canvassers presented and adopted the city’s primary election returns on Aug. 26 after staff review and member questions about ballot curing and turnout.
City Recorder Wendy Downs reported mayoral totals: Monica Zoltanski 10,517 votes; Cindy Sharkey 5,120; Lisonbee Stroud 2,387; Roger Downward 265; Justin Hilgendorf 111. In District 3, Chris Nicoll received 2,107 votes and Iva Williams 1,158; Nicoll and Williams will advance to the general election. Recorder Downs said total ballots cast were 18,479 (32.9% turnout of approximately 56,098 active voters); 325 ballots were rejected as postmarked late or otherwise ineligible, and 149 ballots had signatures that did not match and were challenged but some were cured.
Council members asked clarifying questions about whether turnout figures included challenged or late ballots; Recorder Downs explained turnout reported reflects ballots counted. A motion to accept the canvass results passed on roll call vote, and the board adopted the results 6–0.
