Aquatics presentation warns of staffing shortfalls that strain pool operations
Summary
A presenter told the board the aquatic program needs roughly 750–800 part-time staff hours per month, has seen 36 lifeguards resign in five years, and faces retention and last-minute absence challenges; limited local candidate pools and summer scheduling add pressure.

During a presentation about the aquatic center, a speaker described how staffing limitations threaten consistent operations and programming. "It takes about 750 to 800 part time staff hours to operate our pools and facility effectively," the presenter said, and noted high turnover with "36 lifeguards" leaving over the past five years. The presenter explained monthly in-service training (CPR, AED) and other retention efforts but said last-minute absences can compromise safety and program delivery.
Board members and staff discussed short-term hires and recruitment plans: the presenter said six lifeguards left within a month and three were hired and trained this month, but that two hires are high-school students whose availability will shift in the fall and one is on the swim team. Staff said they will run another recruitment round by the end of July to try to meet the 750–800 hour need.
