Affiliation lets UM paramedic students complete shadowing hours in Anaconda

The commission approved an affiliation agreement with the University of Montana allowing paramedic students to complete clinical shadowing hours with Anaconda Fire & Rescue. Chief Cody Tocher said the requirement for paramedic certification includes extensive on-the-job observation and that this agreement will let students complete those hours locally without traveling to larger departments.
"They are required to have 720 hours just shadowing a paramedic and with us only having a couple of paramedics, that's impossible to do in the time period so they will have to go to Butte or Missoula to shadow, but if we get this, they can use some of their hours shadowing in our department essentially," Tocher said. Commissioners approved the affiliation 5–0. The agreement is intended to support local workforce development and give students exposure to rural EMS practice.
