Council accepts donated ‘Leila the elephant’ sculpture; location to be determined

The donor offered to maintain the sculpture and provide protective varnish twice yearly, and council accepted upon motion. Resident Steve Lewenstein offered to host the sculpture at a private bocce court near Brick Market Place and discussed signage and indemnification arrangements. City administration said the city had a deadline to accept the gift and planned to store the piece over winter while boards and commissions consider permanent public locations. "My intention... is to receive the elephant and then store it while we're thinking about the ultimate permanent location," administration said.
Council approved accepting the gift and asked staff and interested boards to develop site proposals during the winter months for council consideration.
