The Newport City Council approved a matching share, not to exceed $1,200,000, to support an Economic Development Administration (EDA) FY23 disaster supplemental grant for stormwater and climate‑resiliency upgrades in the North End.
The Utilities Department briefed council that several improvements are already complete, and that the proposed project would include directional drilling under DOT roadway and upsizing pipes in the Prescott Hall neighborhood. The director said the work would be part of about $6 million in improvements previously deferred when the water pollution control fee adjustments were delayed. Council expressed appreciation for EDA guidance and unanimously approved the matching share.
Funding will come from the Water Pollution Control Division Capital Improvement Program and staff said further budgeting and CIP steps will follow if the grant is awarded.
