Nonprofit '1 Kind Act Today' briefs council on volunteer programs as city prepares a kindness proclamation

Mason Bennett, director of 1 Kind Act Today, told the council his organization works with corrections, juvenile justice, schools and businesses to promote daily deliberate acts of kindness and community certification. He described recent volunteer projects including packaging toiletry kits for flood victims and a large meal-kit effort at the University of Utah done in partnership with the 9/11 Day of Service. "The whole point of what 1 Kind Act a Day is all about is creating kinder communities by inspiring daily acts of deliberate kindness," Bennett said, summarizing the group's aim.
City staff said tonight's presentation was informational only; the joint resolution and a proclamation recognizing April 12 as Kindness Day (set by the state legislature) will return for council consideration on the 30th. Bennett offered ideas for public recognition — co-branding events, challenge coins and youth engagement — and council members expressed general appreciation for the group's volunteer efforts.
