Astoria police report 47 stops, 17 citations during crosswalk enforcement; 1 DUI arrest at 16th & Irving

Sergeant Litwin said the operation began in the morning and continued into the early afternoon, with enforcement teams working three locations. "During that time, we had a total of 47 stops and, I think 17 citations," he said, and noted that at 16th and Irving officers stopped 11 vehicles and issued two or three citations at that location.
Chief Kelly connected the enforcement activity to the fatality investigation: she said officers had a DUI arrest at 16th & Irving earlier in the day and later identified the driver in the fatal crash. Kelly said officers recovered firearms from the vehicle and reported blood draws showing very high alcohol readings.
Both chiefs emphasized that enforcement is one part of a three-part approach (engineering, enforcement and education) and that the department will continue coordinated operations with state troopers and neighboring agencies.
