Commissioner Kiernan asked the council to set a public hearing to amend Chapter 2-12, Article 3, Section 2-12-24 of the City Code to implement changes permitted by New York State law that would allow municipalities to adopt a senior citizen property tax exemption of up to 65% and revise the income calculation method. The county has already adopted a resolution allowing up to a 65% exemption, Kiernan noted.
The council scheduled the hearing for the next meeting at 7:00 p.m. Staff said the current city sliding scale was set on Dec. 6, 2022 and that the agenda will be updated with ordinance language and materials prior to the hearing.
Why it matters: if adopted following public hearings and ordinance process, the change could expand property tax relief for eligible senior residents in Saratoga Springs; final details, including revised income limits and implementation mechanics, will be posted with the agenda materials.
