The Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the San Diego Food Bank on Sept. 17 to participate in the Food 4 Kids Backpack program, which provides weekend food packages to chronically hungry elementary students at no cost to families.
Community Collaborative Director Janessa Nedney told the Board the program serves TK-6 students identified by counselors or social workers and is subsidized by the Food Bank at a cost of $300 per student for 36 weeks. "The program provides weekend food packages to chronically hungry elementary school students (TK —6th grade) from low-income households who are at risk of hunger over the weekend when free school meals are not available," Nedney said. Distribution will include parent pickup at the Child Nutrition warehouse on Wednesdays and possible school-site drop-off by district staff Wednesday through Friday.
