Point Roberts committee pushes community-led roadside mowing and culvert clean-up

Committee members urged a neighborhood-led effort to keep Point Roberts roadsides trimmed and culverts clear after Whatcom County staff told the committee budgeted mowing happens only once a year.

“if we want it done, we're gonna have to do it ourselves,” a committee member (Speaker 3) said, summarizing a recent exchange with county public works that left little expectation of more frequent county mowing. Members said overgrown rights-of-way make it difficult and unsafe for people walking with strollers or riding bikes.

The group discussed several practical responses: recruiting homeowners with equipment, asking local landscaping companies to dedicate time, and organizing a community “clean day” in August before Labor Day to clear culverts and ditches. Speaker 3 volunteered to contact contractors and to compile photographs documenting problem locations to share with county staff.

Moderator (Speaker 4) advised starting a conversation with county staff — including an outreach to Elizabeth K. in Public Works — to confirm whether a right-of-way permit or other coordination would be required for volunteers or contractors working near the road edge. The committee agreed to create outreach materials and a local sign-up list for neighbors who need help or want to volunteer.

The committee framed the effort as both a safety measure and a way to reduce winter flooding risk by clearing plugged culverts; no formal vote or contract authorization occurred at the meeting, and the plan requires follow-up with county staff about permissions and liability.
