City highlights affordable-housing summit and workforce pilot focused on hospitality jobs

Paul Grimes told the board the city recently hosted an affordable-housing summit that brought together investors, lenders and innovators and drew more than 300 attendees.
"We had over 300 attendees," Grimes said, adding that one presenter highlighted new construction technologies — including prefabrication and large-format 3D-printing techniques — that could shorten homebuilding cycles. Grimes said the city is evaluating such approaches as possible tools to address local housing shortages.
Grimes also described a North Central Texas workforce-development pilot launching this week that will focus initially on the hospitality sector (venues, restaurants and hotels). He said McKinney is the first city invited to collaborate on aligning high schools, community colleges and employers to reduce barriers such as housing and childcare for entry-level workers.
