Sheriff Mike Buehler told the Vernon County Commission on Nov. 5 that the sheriff's office has faced records-maintenance problems under the previous administration that have impeded its ability to receive grants and that the current records product, Tac10, is causing access issues.
"They do have maintenance plans yearly on fleet plan approximately $250,000-260,000 for 16 vehicles," Buehler said, and he added that switching the records system could be costly: "It will cost an estimated $70,000-$80,000 to start up with a new company." He also said officials have discussed leasing vehicles with Enterprise Rentals and could include Emergency Management, the Public Administrator, and Road and Bridge vehicles in a consolidated plan.
Buehler said the department has contacted the Department of Public Safety regarding the records problem but has lost communications because the office cannot open records in the current system (Tac10), which acquired a system called Global. The sheriff presented cost estimates and options so the Commission could weigh leasing versus outright purchase and the costs of migrating to a different records vendor.
The matter was presented for the Commission's awareness; no formal motion or funding decision was recorded in the transcript. The commission did not take immediate action on purchasing a new records system during the meeting.
