Commission questions visitor center massing, copper finish and ADA vestibule at Armory Hall plan

Commissioners pressed the applicant on the proposed visitor center addition and the small vestibule at the Connor Park side of the Armory Hall plan, questioning both massing and materials. Several members said the visitor center height and the scale of glazed storefronts may overwhelm the historic masonry and suggested alternatives or a reduced profile.
During discussion one commissioner said the visitor center and associated roof elements appeared "almost 14 feet tall," covering much of the side elevation, and urged the applicant to explore lowering the roof or stepping the screening so the addition reads as separate from the armory. Commissioners also criticized proposing the same patinaed copper finish for both the historic roof and the new additions, saying that material similarity would reduce visual separation between old and new.
The applicant said they set the visitor center back from the Galena façade to defer to the historic building and that the higher front portion of the visitor center is intended to screen mechanical equipment. Staff and commissioners suggested alternatives: different finish treatments (matte standing seam rather than pre‑patinaed copper), use of a hyphen or small gap between old and new to make the addition legible, and reduction of new fenestration where possible.
No approval was given; the Commission continued the discussion so the applicant can test alternate materials and reduced-massing options.
