Board approves two-year Algebra I sequence to strengthen math foundations

The Hinckley-Big Rock Board of Education approved a two-year sequence for Algebra I on Feb. 18, voting 6-0 to adopt "Foundations of Algebra" followed by "Algebra and Functions." The sequence is intended for students who need more in-depth instruction before moving on to Geometry as juniors, meeting the district's three-year math requirement.
Mrs. Larsen said the proposal responds to consistent observations of student difficulty in Algebra II and would give teachers more time to reinforce foundational skills that may be lacking from earlier grades. Placement into the sequence will be determined by MAP testing scores, classroom performance and teacher recommendations. The motion to approve was made by Abigail Barrett and seconded by Jack Haines; the board vote recorded all members as yea.
Under the approved plan, students who complete the two-year Algebra I sequence could proceed to Geometry as juniors or enroll in Algebra II or other math electives, preserving diploma math-credit requirements.
