Teen services highlighted as 657 teens sign up for summer programs at Coralville Public Library

Karen Stierler, the Coralville Public Library's Teen Services Librarian, told the board on July 8 that 657 teens had signed up for this summer's programs to date and described a mix of outreach, volunteer training and in-library teen programming. Stierler, who has worked at the library for 28 years, said attendance at the weekly Teen Hangout has ranged from about 10 to 64 participants and that staff spend time in the teen area daily to monitor needs and preferences.
Stierler described outreach to 7th- and 8th-grade ELL students at Northwest Middle School and the Teen Advisory Board's role in planning events and the Summer Reading Challenge. She said TAB members help plan and run summer programs and that the Friends of the Library have provided roughly $1,000 in recent years to buy books distributed at a winter community meal; the Friends also support a Teen Service Award and help fund a teen internship. "657 teens signed up this year to date," she reported.
