The Fort Myers City Council Monday approved Resolution 2025-29, authorizing the mayor and city manager to sign a federally funded subaward and grant agreement for Canal Armoring Phase 2.
City Engineer Nicole Setzer explained the funding source and scope: the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) award provides $3,985,660.50 with a required city match of $1,328,553.50, bringing the total project value to $5,314,214. Setzer said the award will fund canal armoring and stabilization work in multiple locations around the city identified during earlier design phases.
Council member Geraldo noted local areas of concern along Ford Street and near Franklin Park Elementary and asked whether the grant could be used to enclose or pipe ditches. Setzer replied the HMGP award implements the phase‑one design and that closing or piping channels could jeopardize eligibility for the current funding, but that data from this project can inform future work.
The council voted to approve the resolution; staff will coordinate with the grant agency on allowable treatments and prepare implementation steps.
