Cayuga County funds Community Science Institute for lake HABs and stream monitoring

Cayuga County approved contracts with the Community Science Institute (CSI) to continue monitoring harmful algal blooms (HABs) on Cayuga Lake and a volunteer stream monitoring program in 2026.
The Legislature acknowledged CSI as a sole‑source provider for the specified professional services and authorized the Chair to sign a nine‑month HABs monitoring agreement not to exceed $10,000 and a ten‑month stream monitoring agreement not to exceed $22,000, both funded from the county WQMA budget lines. The proposals noted a similar scope to 2025 work and were to be reviewed as to form by the County Attorney.
Motions to approve both contracts were moved and seconded and recorded as carried 'all in favor.' The county indicated the monitoring supports restoration and protection of the Cayuga Lake Watershed.
