Jerome County certifies primary results; tied precinct seat decided by coin flip

Deputy Clerk Ryan Treanor presented the Jerome County primary-election canvass on May 26, reporting that "between early voting and election day there were a total of 92 registrations" and that 2,528 ballots were cast for the election, yielding roughly a 28 percent turnout. The board approved the canvass by unanimous motion.
County Clerk Cy Lootens told the board that one contest — the Northwest Republican precinct committeeman — ended in a tie and, citing state law, said it must be resolved by a coin flip. "Under Idaho Code when there is a tie for this position it would be decided via flipping a coin," Cy said. Both candidates, Brian Smith and Jesse Human, drew sticky notes from a bowl to determine which would call; after both waived the right to a recount, Cy flipped the coin. The flip landed on tails, and Jesse Human was declared the winner.
Commissioner Art Watkins moved to approve the canvass as presented and Commissioner Charles Howell seconded; the motion passed unanimously. The board recessed at 9:32 a.m. and reconvened later the same day to continue business.
