Pending county appeals leave tax rate uncertain; revenue‑neutral rate estimated at $0.42–$0.43
Summary
Finance Director Alisha Anderson said appeals to the Wilkes County Tax Office mean the town cannot yet confirm taxable values; she estimated a revenue‑neutral rate between $0.42 and $0.43 versus the current $0.41, and commissioners asked for the underlying numbers used last year.

Director Alisha Anderson told the Board staff were still waiting on appeals information from the Wilkes County Tax Office and that the town could not confirm taxable values until appeals conclude. "We have not yet received in what we budgeted for at 2.4 million," she said while explaining the uncertainty; she estimated a revenue‑neutral rate between $0.42 and $0.43 and said current rate is $0.41.
Commissioners asked for the supporting data and asked whether updated information would be available before budget adoption. Commissioner Andrew Palmer and others pressed staff to show the numbers used last year to better understand differences caused by revaluation, exemptions (Section 42 properties), and tax‑exempt entities such as the Health Foundation and churches.
