The Town of Coats Board of Commissioners voted unanimously July 10 to adopt an updated Comprehensive Land Use Plan intended to replace an older town plan and guide future growth.
Hazel Stephenson, chair of the town Planning Board, told the board that the Planning Board solicited public input through surveys and open‑house meetings and that "the Town was mandated by law to have a Land Use Plan." Consultant Harrison Wenchell of KCI & Associates presented highlights from the final draft before the board opened a public hearing. Resident Andy Cole spoke in favor of the plan and said the process "enabled him to feel involved in planning for the future." The motion to adopt the plan was made by Mayor Pro Tem Marc Powell, seconded by Commissioner Shirley Allen, and approved unanimously.
The adoption places the Coats Future Comprehensive Land Use Plan into the town’s official planning framework. The Planning Board recommended the final draft at its June 5 meeting. The board did not attach an effective-date amendment beyond the adoption vote; implementation steps and any required follow-ups will be addressed through staff reports and future agenda items.
