Economic development staff presented a draft concept to brand a downtown 'Fort Myers Culinary District' designed to attract visitors, curate restaurant tenants and create coordinated marketing and events. The staff outline covered phased tasks including concept development, design and infrastructure, tenant curation, marketing and operations and potential budget and staffing models; staff emphasized the district would be a marketing overlay rather than a formal jurisdictional boundary and suggested community meetings with restaurant owners and partner institutions.
Steve Weathers framed the proposal as exploratory and adaptable, cautioning that “This is just a concept. This is just an idea. Nothing really is in stone here.” Council members expressed interest in securing unique, non‑chain anchor restaurants and in coordinating with the CRA, McCollum Hall and other downtown assets. Staff said next steps would include more engagement with restaurant and merchant stakeholders, discussions with brand/marketing partners and continued assessment of budget/staffing approaches to launch pilot events and banners to test the idea.
