Ashley Coburn introduced herself to the board as the Title VI coordinator: "I am the title 6 coordinator for our Indian education grant, and that means I'm the boots on the ground person," she said, and described the program's parent-driven goals for 2024-25.
Coburn said the district currently has 195 students enrolled in the Title VI program districtwide and described activities including three required family nights, partnerships with local tribal members for ceremonial drum-making for graduates, and participation in the Western Washington Native American Education Consortium to embed Since Time Immemorial curriculum. "This is a parent-driven grant," she told the board, explaining that parents vote annually on goals and she must have parent support to move grant activities forward.
Board members asked about outreach and whether the program included students beyond Forks; Coburn clarified the enrollment is districtwide and the grant eligibility follows Washington State recognized tribal enrollment rules. She said the program is working to align K-12 content with state requirements for native-history instruction and to expand Native American language instruction and resources.
