At first reading, the Washtucna School District board reviewed a broad set of updated policies designed to align district procedures with state statutes and new guidance.
S1 walked the board through changes including policy language clarifying the legislative representative’s role at WASDA's general assembly; amendments to policy-adoption procedures; and an expanded Learning Assistance Program (LAP) section that incorporates Washington Integrated Student Support protocols and multiple RCW references. S1 noted several policy sections are new or have substantive additions and that some changes are procedural clarifications to match state law (Title 28A RCW references were cited in the packet).
On policy 4310, S1 explained new language governing interactions with law enforcement and immigration officers, saying the district will not permit entry by immigration officers without a warrant and reiterated that students cannot be removed from campus without proper legal process or parental permission. S1 described updates to sick-leave procedures (5401) aligning verification requirements to RCW 49.46.0.210 for absences over three days, and other leave provisions under 5403 and FMLA alignment.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the definition of "community partner," advisory committee approvals and whether the district had previously approved advisory lists; S1 said she would follow up with the advisory committee documentation. S1 emphasized this is a first reading and the board can propose edits before a future vote to adopt the policies.
