County selects Option 1 for 464th Avenue safety project; construction slated for 2028

Highway Superintendent Brian Gustad briefed the Brookings County Commission on May 19 that the county secured a safety grant after fatalities at the 464th Avenue and 220th Street intersection and presented right-of-way layout options produced by the Department of Transportation.
Gustad said the intersection sits low into wetlands and that procurement of wetland mitigation credits will be necessary. He recommended Option 1 for the right-of-way layout; by consensus the board agreed to move forward with Option 1 and Gustad said construction is scheduled for 2028.
The board also noted a bid opening for two structures will occur June 16 at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room next to the Chambers. The county will coordinate DOT options, wetland mitigation planning and subsequent contracting ahead of the 2028 construction window.
