City and county adopt joint zoning change to shorten public-notice publication window to 10 days

The Brookings City Council and the Brookings County Commission jointly approved an amendment to their joint zoning ordinance (chapter 94, appendix A) to change publication requirements for zoning notices from 14 days to 10 days.
Community Development Director Mike Strzok told the joint meeting the change "is consistent with state law" and offers flexibility given the local register now publishes twice a week; he said the amendment received a unanimous recommendation from the County Planning Commission and a 4–1 recommendation from the City Planning Commission.
With motions made and seconded in both bodies, the councils opened the public hearing, heard no public comment, and passed the ordinance by roll call on both the city and county sides.
Staff framed the amendment as a technical alignment with state statute and an operational fix to avoid missed-notice scenarios when the local paper publishes Fridays only twice weekly. No other changes to the zoning ordinance were discussed in relation to the publication window.
