The Niles City Council on June 9 approved a set of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and related local expenditures aimed at accessibility, home repair, and community programming.
Council accepted Cameron’s Construction's bid of $24,871 for installation of an ADA bathroom at 303 S. 3rd Street to be paid with CDBG funds and authorized the mayor to sign the contract. The council also accepted ACE Plumbing and Heating's bid of $5,516 for installation of a water heater and exhaust work at 1720 N. 11th Street under the CDBG Home Repair Program. Separately, council accepted a $5,100 bid from Quality Environmental for asbestos removal at the Niles History Center and approved a $2,500 donation from the City Council’s Community Promotions budget to Western Michigan University for the Fort St. Joseph Archaeology Open House (Aug. 2–3, 2025).
In addition, the council authorized FY2024 CDBG subrecipient agreements: YMCA of Greater Michiana for $15,000 and WeEcho for $7,500, and increased the allocation to the School Resource Officer program by $3,500. Most motions carried by roll call with either unanimous support or a single dissent in some items; funding sources were noted as CDBG or Council Community Promotions where applicable.
