Onslow County Schools staff credited with rebuilding systems after June cyber intrusion

"From the morning of June 9, when our network first showed signs of a criminal intrusion, our IT staff moved quickly and decisively," said Mr. Anderson, who presented the district’s account of the response and recovery. He credited the chief technology officer, Jeff Pittman, and a cross‑agency response involving the North Carolina Joint Cybersecurity Task Force, the North Carolina National Guard, the Department of Information Technology, the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service.
Why it matters: Officials said rapid action limited damage and let core services return in time for summer programs and the opening of school. Mr. Anderson said telephone service was fully restored across all schools within days and that, by late June, systems supporting finance, human resources and communications were back online. He reported wireless connectivity returned to key locations and that "approximately 90% of teacher laptops have been secured, tested, and made ready for distribution in time for the new school year."
District officials said the recovery protected planned summer learning — including credit recovery and courses run in partnership with Coastal Carolina Community College — and left the district on a stronger footing heading into the 2026–27 school year. Chairman Garvey later thanked Mr. Pittman "for all that you've done since this incident occurred."
