DPW proposes cardboard-only dumpsters and town-hall drop-offs to help downtown businesses

Tim Olsen told the Select Board that downtown businesses face challenges under the single-barrel program because some businesses produce large amounts of cardboard in peak weeks. He said one business, the Accord Food Pantry, "will probably need, like, 7 barrels," and proposed a combination approach that includes giving each business one barrel and establishing overflow locations for cardboard-only dumpsters in convenient downtown spots.
Olsen suggested a potential cardboard-only dumpster at the corner of Willow and Railroad, noting the site might take a parking space, or enlarging the cardboard dumpster at Town Hall and arranging scheduled drop-off windows. He said the proposed downtown dumpster would be sized at about 10 cubic yards (similar to town-hall equipment) and that, if space is constrained, the town could consider a monthly drop-off schedule instead. Olsen cautioned about truck access and parking constraints and said Casella may charge a small additional fee for extra dumpsters if the town requests them.
