The Brookings County Commission on June 4 declared two Glock 9mm handguns surplus and authorized a process to determine their appraised value, with an amendment to the motion appointing three appraisers.
Sheriff Marty Stanwick explained the two weapons include one he carried and one issued to a retiring deputy; he said both officers would be willing to pay fair market value for the weapons after following statutory procedures. County staff explained that SDCL 6‑13‑2 requires appointment of three property owners of the political subdivision to appraise the value or, alternatively, using licensed fee appraisers. Commissioners amended the motion to appoint the Exchange, Mike Cotton, and Dennis Miller as appraisers. The amendment and the main motion carried on roll call.
Staff said if the appraised value is under a statutory threshold, the county could either offer a purchase to the retiring officers or place the guns on a public surplus sale; the commissioners indicated a preference to permit purchase by the retiring officers at appraised value once the appraisal process is complete.
