County declares local disaster after Tescott, Salt Creek flooding; state aid eligibility uncertain

Ottawa County adopted Resolution 25-17 Sept. 15 to declare a local disaster emergency for the Sept. 8-15 flood event affecting Tescott and the Salt Creek area. Emergency Management Director Marie Ballou presented the declaration and said the recent Presidential disaster declaration did not include Ottawa County.
Ballou told commissioners that to qualify for state aid, public-sector damages must reach at least $5 million (excluding private or insured losses) and she described log jams and flood-related safety hazards along creeks and rivers. Public Works Director Chris Smith said crews must wait for waters to recede before assessing log jams and determining whether county crews can safely remove obstructions.
