The Ottawa County Board of County Commissioners voted Aug. 25 to hire a curator and a part-time assistant for the county museum after discussing benefit costs and the museum board’s organizational preferences. County Clerk Tammi Cox said museum board representatives were present and confirmed the board does not want to become a 501(c)(3). "The museum is not interested in becoming a 501c3," board member Jim Kay said during the discussion.
Commissioner Carla Grund said the county’s cost for full-time benefits is about $2,200 per month and recommended hiring two part-time employees instead. Commissioner Duane Morris moved to hire a curator and a part-time assistant; the motion passed 2-0 (Morris and Commissioner Scott Mortimer voted aye; Commissioner Grund voted nay). The commission did not adopt a change in the museum’s organizational status; staffing and benefit-cost implications will proceed under the county employment model.
