Commissioner Carla Grund told the public she had proposed a sales-tax ballot initiative intended to help cover Ottawa County EMS costs.
"We currently pay 6 mills to EMS, but EMS is not statutorily required and having a ballot initiative is an alternate source of income. We haven't taken any action on it," Grund said during the public forum. She described the proposal as an alternative revenue stream to reduce reliance on the existing mill levy for emergency medical services.
The discussion was introductory: commissioners did not vote on placing a sales-tax question on the ballot at the Aug. 11 meeting. The proposal remains under consideration and would require future formal action by the board to appear on a ballot.
