The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors authorized the sheriff's office to sign a five‑year contract with Axon after Sheriff staff outlined equipment and funding details.
Captain Todd Peterson said the contract will supply upgraded tasers, body cameras, in‑car cameras and two drones. “Within that contract over the course of the next 5 years, we'll receive new tasers, new body cameras, and new in car cameras,” Peterson said, adding the county expects to trade in existing drones and receive two replacements.
Ryan Erickson (board administration) told the board the county currently holds roughly a $780,000 credit with Axon that will be applied to payments for 2025 and 2026; no physical payment is expected until November 2027. Erickson said most of the contract cost is operating (software/maintenance) and will need to be included in the FY28 operating budget rather than CIP; earlier purchases had been funded with CIP and ARPA. The board approved authorization to receive and sign the contract and to continue the county's contract relationship with Axon (motion passed 5–0).
The board did not discuss vendor alternatives in detail during the public meeting and did not attach additional conditions to the authorization beyond standard budget integration.
