During the public-comment period, a resident (speaker 14) handed out a proposed ordinance aimed at restricting formula or chain businesses that, the commenter argued, would otherwise make the town look like other municipalities.
The commenter said the ordinance would allow some chain features (name, uniforms or services) but would prohibit design and combined features that make businesses look and act identically across multiple locations. "We wanna be unique," the commenter said, and asked the council to consider restrictions to preserve the town's historic small-town character.
Council members acknowledged the suggestion; staff and council indicated they would continue to consider zoning and design options in future amendments. The public comment signaled an appetite among at least some residents for design-based restrictions on national chains.
